Troubleshooting

No hot water

Cause: Pilot light out (gas), tripped breaker (electric), or faulty thermostat
Solution: Gas: Relight the pilot per manufacturer instructions. Electric: Check the circuit breaker and reset if tripped. If the issue persists, the thermostat or heating element may need replacement.

Water not hot enough

Cause: Thermostat set too low, sediment buildup, or failing heating element
Solution: Check and adjust the thermostat to 120°F. Flush the tank to remove sediment. If an electric unit, test the heating elements.

Rumbling or popping noises

Cause: Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank
Solution: Flush the tank to remove accumulated sediment. Regular flushing prevents this issue.

Water leaking from tank

Cause: Corroded tank, loose fittings, or faulty T&P valve
Solution: If water is leaking from the tank body, the inner tank is corroded and the unit needs replacement. Check fittings and the T&P valve for leaks first.

Reset Procedures

Gas Water Heater Pilot Relight

  1. Turn the gas control knob to the OFF position.
  2. Wait 5 minutes for any residual gas to dissipate.
  3. Turn the knob to PILOT.
  4. Press and hold the knob while using the igniter or a long match to light the pilot.
  5. Continue holding for 30–60 seconds after the pilot lights.
  6. Release the knob and turn to the desired temperature setting.

Electric Water Heater Reset

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker for the water heater.
  2. Remove the access panel (usually upper panel).
  3. Press the red reset button on the thermostat.
  4. Replace the access panel and insulation.
  5. Turn the circuit breaker back on.

Safety Warnings

Setting the water heater above 120°F increases the risk of scalding burns. Higher temperatures are especially dangerous for children and elderly.

Call a professional

Never block the T&P relief valve discharge pipe. It is a critical safety device that prevents tank explosion from overpressure.

Call a professional

For gas water heaters: if you smell gas near the unit, do not attempt to light the pilot. Leave the area and contact your gas company.
