Troubleshooting

May require a professional

System not cooling or heating

Cause: Dirty filter, tripped breaker, thermostat issue, or refrigerant leak
Solution: Check and replace the air filter. Verify the thermostat is set correctly and has fresh batteries. Check the circuit breaker. If the issue persists, contact an HVAC technician.

Short cycling (turning on and off frequently)

Cause: Oversized unit, dirty filter, low refrigerant, or thermostat placement issue
Solution: Replace the air filter. Ensure the thermostat is not in direct sunlight or near a heat source. If the issue continues, have a technician check the refrigerant charge.

Weak airflow from vents

Cause: Clogged filter, ductwork leaks, or blower motor issue
Solution: Replace the air filter. Check that all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. Inspect visible ductwork for disconnections.

Water pooling around indoor unit

Cause: Clogged condensate drain line
Solution: Locate the condensate drain line (PVC pipe near the indoor unit). Clear it with a wet/dry vacuum or by flushing with vinegar and warm water.
May require a professional

Ice forming on the outdoor unit or refrigerant lines

Cause: Low refrigerant, dirty coil, or airflow restriction
Solution: Turn off the system and let the ice melt completely. Replace the air filter. If ice returns after restarting, contact an HVAC technician.

Reset Procedures

Thermostat Reset

  1. Turn the thermostat to OFF.
  2. Turn off the HVAC circuit breaker.
  3. Wait 5 minutes.
  4. Turn the circuit breaker back on.
  5. Wait 5 more minutes before turning the thermostat back on.
  6. Set to the desired mode (heat or cool) and temperature.

Safety Warnings

Never attempt to add or handle refrigerant yourself. Refrigerant requires EPA certification to handle and improper handling can cause frostbite or chemical burns.

Call a professional

Always turn off the HVAC system at the thermostat and circuit breaker before performing any maintenance on the outdoor or indoor unit.

If you notice a hissing sound from the refrigerant lines or the outdoor unit, this may indicate a refrigerant leak. Do not attempt to repair — contact a licensed technician.

Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are installed near all gas-fired heating equipment.
